10 Tips for New Autism Parents

By nazera - July 21, 2020

1. Pace yourself.
Get ready to face new challenges because taking care of an autistic child is not easy for certain people.

2. Get off the Internet.
Stop searching for information on the Internet and ask a real doctor or specialist for advice.

3. Get on social media.
Try to make friends with other autistic parents as well share stories, tips and tricks on how they take care of their child.

4. Be prepared to hear a lot of advice you did not ask for.
Some people that don't understand might think that they know more than others but people don't understand unless they struggle with the same thing. So new parents need to be prepared and try not to get sensitive with the public's judgement.

5. Respect the elders in the autism syndrome disorder world.
This is because they have more experience in taking care of an autistic child than any new parents in this kind of stuff and they have been through it longer. Many hardships have been faced by them and they know more about it.

6. Accept the fact that you are going to try stuff that is totally not going to work.
But trying to be better is not a bad thing and it is actually a good thing for your child development. At least try for your child and maybe it will work someday.

7. Autism is expensive.
New parents need to be prepared as they don't know how their child will turn out like. For example, they might like a certain food and they will want to eat it every day and not eat any other food that they don't like to eat.  Because autistic kids need to have more special care than normal kids do.

8. Accept gift that other people give
People will tend to give stuff to your child as an act of kindness. You should be thankful that the person even cares to give a present such as toys or money as that is one of the ways to help out.

9. Take your kid out everywhere.
Autistic children might have a disorder, but just like every other child they like to go out and play. They can't just be kept lock inside the house because then it would not help with their growth development. They need to see the world in order to understand it.

10. Allow yourself to have a pity party.
It is okay to cry because you are all stressed out and it is a way to relieve the stress that has been building up. It is a challenge every autistic parent faces and you need to be strong for your child.
